CAPSTONE courses

Capstone experiences are a journalism student’s grand finale. These unique SOJC programs provide students with the opportunity to polish the skills they’ve learned in their classes while gaining practical professional experience—building their confidence as well as their portfolios. Students find capstone experiences to be a perfect bridge to their careers, while employers appreciate the preparation they provide.

Ad Team:  The pitch is only ten minutes long, but the preparation consumes your waking hours for the better part of a year. Since 1983, Advertising students at the SOJC have participated in the American Advertising Federation’s Student Competition Team. Several of these teams have won the AAF’s regional competition.

Mosaic:  Since 2004, news-editorial students at the SOJC have spent spring term putting together a newspaper while exploring an important social issue, from newsroom diversity to class status.  The paper has won two awards from the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication,

FLUX:
There’s a reason why this student-produced magazine is one of the all-time leaders in magazine pacemaker awards, the highest honor for a college publication, and why more than 100 individual student awards have been earned by Flux staffers and contributors. As adviser Mark Blaine once put it—“it’s not just a course, but a lifestyle.”. Beginning winter term, students apply for the more than thirty available positions on the magazine staff, from advertising sales to staff writer to art director and editor, as well as for the staff of the magazine’s online counterpart, influx. Their hard work and raw talent combine over the next two terms to create one amazing magazine.

Oregon News: SOJC Electronic Media majors know how to shoot video.  They know how to light and mic an interview. They know how to research and write a news story in a way that is ethical, fair and accurate.  All of this comes together on Oregon News, a half-hour live cable news broadcast.  Students are the staff for this demanding and exciting live television experience, which puts to the test all the skills electronic media students learn and helps them hone their quick-thinking and flexibility. Students may also produce Oregon Extra, a half-hour long public affairs program.

Public Relations Campaigns: Whether their ultimate goal is to work in a nonprofit or an agency, public relations students at the SOJC bring what they’ve learned to bear in PR Campaigns, the final course in the major.
