School Names Three Lokey Scholars for 09-10 School Year
Third-year doctoral students Andre Sirois and David Gracon and senior Bonnie Shelton are this year’s Lorry I. Lokey scholars. The Lokey Scholarships were presented during the June 12 SOJC Student Recognition Reception.

Media in Ghana
Fourteen SOJC students are in Ghana participating in the school's Media in Ghana Program. Following orientation at the University of Ghana campus, they practice their skills in five-week full-time internships in Ghanaian media and communications outlets. This is the sixth year the SOJC has offered this program.

SOJC Visiting Instructor of News-Editorial Journalism Michael Werner, a first year professor and a 2008 graduate of SOJC’s Literary Nonfiction program, took home the Adjunct Teaching Award at this year's commencement ceremonies.
SOJC Announces 2009 Hall of Achievement Class
The late Ann Sullivan ’42, who helped pave the way for women in journalism as a reporter at The Oregonian, will be honored along with Steve O’Leary ’69, president of O’Leary and Partners Advertising and a noted author and speaker about word-of-mouth advertising. Glenn Cole ’92, Principal and Creative Director of 72 and Sunny, will receive the inaugural Eric Allen Award for alumni under 40 at the event, which is scheduled for November 13.
Morrison is Marshall Award Winner—for the second year in a row!
For the second year in a row, Deborah Morrison, the Chambers Distinguished Professor of Advertising, earned the Marshall Award for Innovative Teaching. She is the only professor in its fifteen-year history to win the award twice.
Congratulations, Class of 2009
Nearly 400 graduates walked across the stage at Mac Court on Saturday, June 13 for the SOJC's ninety-fourth commencement. Doug Bates '68, editorial page editor of The Oregonian and a member of the school's Hall of Achievement, presented the graduates with a clear-eyed but optimistic message: "You are entering a period of great ambiguity but also incredible opportunity." Journalism students win prestigious Undergraduate Research Award

After nearly 11 years as Associate Dean for the SOJC, Stavitsky heads north as director of the school’s George S. Turnbull Center in Portland.
Ghana 2008
This summer marked the fifth year of the SOJC’s six-week Media in Ghana program, which brings 10-13 students to Ghana for professional internships, lectures, and field trips. This year 13 students participated.
Julianne Newton named Associate Dean of the SOJC
Newton, a member of the SOJC faculty since 2000, says she hopes to "facilitate curriculum innovation by building on the hallmarks of UO's journalism and communication traditions."
Mosaic 2008 honors "Track Town USA"
Mosaic, the capstone course for news-editorial majors, is dedicated entirely to Eugene's legacy as Track Town USA, in honor of the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials that took place at Hayward Field during the past ten days.
SOJC Students earn a Northwest Regional Emmy Award for their documentary
Students receive a College Northwest Regional Chapter Emmy Award for their documentary, “Vanport: Oregon's lost city." Rebecca Purice, Sasha Davis, Brian Schiedel, Brian Van Peski, and Chris McKee produced the documentary about the largest public housing project during World War II.
Flux 2008
Journalism students across all majors worked together to produce the sixteenth issue of the award-winning student magazine Flux. This year's publication, according to one staffer, "is more multifaceted than ever before." In addition to its print magazine, Flux has a bigger interactive online website, including documentaries, slideshows and multimedia. Other multimedia includes interactive flash pieces that add a new dimension to the Flux experience.
Blogging through the wonder
Earlier this year Claire LaPoma and her boyfriend, Ryan Harper hiked 31 miles on the four-day Inca Trail to Macchu Pichu, narrowly escaped the eruption of the Tungurahua Volcano, lived in the jungle with the Shuar tribe, and taught 30 rambunctious Ecuadorian children beginning English. And during their journey through Peru and Ecuador, their family, friends and even strangers were there with them – reading their blog, “Wandering through the Wonder.”
Pat Curtin honored as Distinguished Educator
Described by both students and colleagues as “unfailingly generous with her time and never too busy to help,” Pat Curtin, School of Journalism and Communication Chair in Public Relations, will receive the Distinguished Educator Award from the Mass Communication and Society Division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication at the AEJMC convention in August.
Junior Ryan Knutson named one of UWIRE's 100 best student journalists
The students were chosen "for their potential to shape the media industry in the years ahead."
Watch: Payne Awards for Ethics in Journalism
Two newspapers and a collegiate journalist were honored with Payne Awards for Ethics in Journalism at an awards ceremony held Thursday, May 8, at the School of Journalism and Communication. The Spokesman-Review, a daily newspaper in Spokane, Wash., and The Phoenix New Times, an alternative newsweekly in Phoenix, Ariz., were given awards in the News Organization category. Ashley Gough, editor of the Mount Observer, a community college newspaper in Massachusetts, won the Collegiate Media category. According to Dean Tim Gleason, "These journalists were awarded for doing good journalism and making the right decision in the face of extreme pressure.” A panel discussion followed the awards presentation. 2008 Ad Team wins AAF Regional Competition
In keeping with the grand tradition, the group of undergraduate advertising students from the SOJC topped eight other schools in District XI competition, winning first place with their presentation for AOL's AIM and other social networking products. And David Kosse '84, a member of a winning ad team himself, directed a $10,000 award from his employer to the Ad Team endowment fund.
Phil Bladine dies at 89
Philip Newell Bladine ’40, remembered as a “vibrant force” in McMinnville, Ore. where he lived and worked for more than 70 years, died Wednesday at the age of 89.
"That's How Dreams Start"

SOJC Students tour Portland Ad Agencies
SOJC advertising students in an Interactive Media Seminar taught by Instructor Dave Koranda and Deborah Morrison, Chambers Distinguished Professor of Advertising, visited Portland and toured advertising agencies Wieden + Kennedy and Avenue A Razorfish on Friday, February 22. The course is exploring digital media and digital creativity as it pertains to brand development.
SOJC to benefit from Kilkenny gift
In a move that University of Oregon President Dave Frohnmayer says will "help unite academics and athletics at the University of Oregon," Athletic Director Pat Kilkenny and his wife, Stephanie, are giving $1 million to academic programs in the university. The SOJC will benefit from that gift.

Media in Ghana
Twelve SOJC students participated in the annual "Media in Ghana" program, five-week full-time internships in newspaper journalism, television news, radio news, advertising and public relations that began in early July.
Graduate Students present at ICA
Mary Erickson, a second-year doctoral student, was one of seven UO Communication and Society doctoral and master's students who presented their research at the annual conference of the International Communication Association held in San Francisco, May 24-28. The others who presented were: Yeong Doo Moon, Glenn Morris, Janet Kwami, Kathleen Ryan, Carrie Freeman, and Mara Hobler.
