Flux 2008

by Zanne Miller last modified 01:48 PM Tue Jul 08, 2008

Journalism students across all majors worked together to produce the sixteenth issue of the award-winning student magazine Flux. This year's publication, according to one staffer, "is more multifaceted than ever before." In addition to its print magazine, Flux has a bigger interactive online website, including documentaries, slideshows and multimedia. Other multimedia includes interactive flash pieces that add a new dimension to the Flux experience.

Guided in part by suggestions from Carlos Lamadrid '86, the former publisher of Jane magazine and a SOJC grad, the staff was challenged to create a magazine targeted to their audience, students. The staff worked on making a coherent magazine that would appeal to current students and recently graduated alumni who find themselves in a quarter-life crisis. Flux answers the question: What happens after graduation? The cover story is about a Tanya Burka, a MIT graduate, who also earned her Nuclear Plant Reactor Operator License; however, Tanya took a different path and now performs aerial dance. Other articles include, “I am Duck,” which reveals the secrets behind the Duck mascot, and “Unfinished Battles,” a story about Oregon soldiers refusing to be deployed.

"From its inception, Flux has been among the top student-produced magazines in the country," says lead adviser and SOJC instructor Mark Blaine. "Flux is truly a collaborative effort of writers, editors, photographers, designers and videographers, but more than that it's a showcase of the School of Journalism and Communication's most creative and capable students. We advisers (Bill Ryan, Dan Morrison, Jon Palfreman, Skip McFarlane and Mark Blaine) applaud their efforts and enjoy working alongside such a talented group."
