SOJC Students earn a Northwest Regional Emmy Award for their documentary

Students receive a College Northwest Regional Chapter Emmy Award for their documentary, “Vanport: Oregon's lost city." Rebecca Purice, Sasha Davis, Brian Schiedel, Brian Van Peski, and Chris McKee produced the documentary about the largest public housing project during World War II.

The city was built to accommodate ship yard workers and it was never meant to be permanent. Nearly 20 percent of Vanport was African-American, the city started a social change in Oregon. In 1948, a flood of the Colombia River wiped away the city, killing sixteen people; however, the cultural change the city started never died.

"I think winning a regional Emmy is a great thing, especially right out of college. It is a great honor that we were even nominated," recent SOJC graduate Brian Van Peski, who served as director of photography and as an editor, said.

The students traveled to Seattle and the 45th Annual NATAS Northwest Regional Emmy Awards Ceremony on June 7.

The ceremony can be viewed here.

“Vanport: Oregon's Lost City" also won first place in the National Broadcasting Society National Competition in the documentary category and the People's Choice Award and Judge's Honorable Mention in the Downtown Initiative For Visual Arts Indie Film Festival.
