Garner serves as an undergraduate academic adviser. She assists the Assistant Dean for Student Services during IntroDUCKtion, Week of Welcome, Duck Days and Duck Preview; and advises prospective, incoming and current undergraduate journalism students. A former international transfer student from Malaysia, Garner graduated from the school in 1998 with a degree in News/Editorial. She co-teaches the journalism transfer seminar, serves on the school's Diversity Committee and is the voice behind "Quick Question: The jcomm advising podcast."

Garner advises current students on a drop-in basis. Her Fall 2008 drop-in advising hours are:

    Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday/Friday: 9am-11am & 1pm-4pm

    There are no drop-in hours on Thursdays.
